Have you ever heard the argument that states that after people walk away and leave their sad marriage, divorce actually makes them much happier? Well, several studies appear to suggest that this is actually a myth and evidence points to the contrary.
There was a study recently done by the Institute of American Values, when couples who stayed married on twelve (12) parameters of psychological well-being where rated with couples who were divorced. On average, based on what was discovered, those couples who got divorced, five years after the divorce were no happier than were the equally unhappily married couples who actually continued their relationships and stayed together.
There are, of course, many other reasons why individuals who have been divorced do not end up happier:
• Symptoms of depression do not necessarily go away or diminish after the divorce; divorce did not raise people’s self-esteem;
• Staying in the marriage did not help to trap spouses who were unhappy in violent relationships;
• It was obvious that marriages that were unhappy were in fact less common than spouses who were unhappy.
A huge number of married couples usually do want to settle their divorce having the least possible hassle, but divorce attorneys usually make things much worse. They spend time on the case and find arguments making a no hassle divorce into a war or a very nasty one. Attorneys also drag out the paper work.
For couple that become emotionally and financially spent after the divorce, is it really worse getting into the courtroom drama? Can’t couples just get together and talk about their differences without the involvement of third parties who are just trying to make money by turning your divorce into a very nasty one.
